Mizuka (Mika) Yasuoka is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). She obtained her master’s degree in counseling from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas Tech University. She is currently working on some research focusing on traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and the complications that follow. This includes diagnosing mental health disorders, mitigating mental health concerns, and implementing proper counseling practices. Her research during her master’s degree focused on the prevalence of suicide and depression while coping with a TBI.
Mika specializes in depressive disorders, suicidal ideations, life transitions, self-harm, and group counseling. The population groups that she works with are children and adolescents, family, adults, and members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. Her training is in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, and Person-Centered Therapy.
To me, counseling is a journey of being honest with oneself and learning to accept all parts of oneself, flaws and all. I believe this journey is special and sacred, although sometimes difficult. It is an honor to be able to embark on this journey with my clients and to share unique experiences of ourselves.
